The Seacoast Mariners WPSL team is three games into the season. They currently sit 1-2 and are coming off a huge 7-3 win over the Rhode Island Reds. This week also concludes the arrival of the entire roster for this upcoming Summer. We were able to catch up and chat with Catalina Rubiano and Heather Magee on their soccer backgrounds and goals for this upcoming season with the Mariners. Both join the Mariners this summer in preparation for their final season of collegiate soccer at LSU (Louisiana State University).
Tell us about yourselves.
Catalina- “Im from New Orleans. I’m half Columbian. I will be a rising Senior at Louisiana State University and play for the Women’s soccer team. I enjoy going on adventures, going camping and hiking.”
Heather- “I will be a Senior at Louisiana State University. I am from Dallas, TX. This is not my first experience in Maine! I want to be an interior designer!”
What brought you up to Maine?
Catalina & Heather - “Our coaches at LSU wanted us to play in the Summer. I contacted a few teams around the country and Seacoast Mariners got back to me with a great deal for me to come up. I also wanted to explore everything that Maine had to offer!”
Tell us a bit about soccer background.
Catalina- “I played for Carrolton S.A (now Louisiana Fire) since the age of 9. I am a goalkeeper and I dabbled in ODP. I played in the AAU Junior Olympics and won Gold in 2008. I trained with the Columbian National team and am the current starting goalkeeper for LSU.”
Heather- “As a youth player I played for Solar Red (now Solar Chelsea) in Dallas. In 2009 I was introduced to the U.S National Team pool. We won the USYS National Championship in 2010. I am a starting midfielder for LSU.”
What are your goals for the season…
Catalina & Heather- “Get high level training in for the Summer before I head back to LSU. We also want to develop throughout more game experience. Have fun and meet new teammates from other places around the country. Have success and continue to develop in a different setting than we are used to!"
Come check out the WPSL play this Saturday at 4pm at the University of Southern Maine. They face off with the Boston Aztec who beat the Mariners 2-1 earlier in the campaign.
