The Seacoast United U14 Girls captured the Super Y-League National Championship with a 2-1 overtime win over the Washington Freedom in Tampa, FL. Seacoast held a 1-0 lead at the half, but Washington scored the equalizer off of a corner kick with 2 minutes remaining in regulation to force the game to overtime. Rachel Hill scored the game-winner for Seacoast with 3 minutes left in the overtime period off an assist from Sammi Toorish.
Four players from SUSC Maine’s Girls program (Paul Cameron’s U15 Girls team) feature on the SUSC Super Y roster: Catherine (Kip) Chipman, Taylor Littlefield, Sammi Toorish and Caton Beaulieu. The girls all made a contribution to the team’s success.
Toorish has chipped in with several goals including the winner during their very tight first group game against Majestics, VA which finished 2-1, a brace in the 5-0 defeat of Parsippany SC, NJ and the all important second goal in todays 6-0 win over Kingdom, MI. Meanwhile, Beaulieu in goal was spectacular, making several important saves and giving up only one goal during her minutes between the pipes, and Chipman and Littlefield also performed very well at the defensive end of the field with the team only conceding two goals in 6 matches.
Coach David Burgess noted, "Taylor was absolutely superb this weekend and I’m so happy she enjoyed the occasion. Her commitment, passion, and understanding of what was needed throughout the Finals, playing in a position that wasn’t entirely natural shows what a fantastic player and person she is. I was very proud to coach her."
The Seacoast United U14 Girls finished a successful 2009 regular season campaign with an unbeaten record of 11-0-1. They finished first in their division within the New England region against some strong competition. SUSC finished the summer season with a goal differential of +60, scoring 68 goals and conceding only 8 over 12 games heading into the North American Finals this past weekend.
